Between the Sheets is a powerful cocktail from the Prohibition era and is often described as a variation on the Sidecar. The classic cognac base is combined with white rum, which gives the drink additional depth and aromatic complexity.
Preparation:
- 3 cl white rum
- 3 cl cognac (or Élan brandy)
- 3 cl triple sec (e.g., Cointreau)
- 2 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
Put all ingredients together with ice in a shaker, shake vigorously, and then strain into a well-chilled coupette or martini glass. Finally, decorate traditionally with a lemon zest.
The cocktail was probably created in the 1920s or 1930s. It is best known for its association with Harry MacElhone at the famous Harry's New York Bar in Paris. Its name hints at its potent effect. Thanks to the double alcohol content of the main spirits, this cocktail is said to quickly get you “between the sheets.”
